How to Get to Hoi An (2026): Flights, Trains, and the Last 30km
Hoi An doesn't have an airport. It doesn't have a train station either. What it has is a beautifully preserved old town that the modern transport network politely declines to serve directly - so getting here always means getting to Da Nang first, then covering the last 30km yourself.
Da Nang, 30km north, has the airport, the trains, and the long-haul buses. Once you accept that everything funnels through Da Nang, the whole thing gets simple. Here's how to reach it from wherever you're starting.
The quick answer
Fly into Da Nang (DAD). It's the only airport within striking distance, every domestic route and a pile of international ones land there, and it's a 45-minute transfer to Hoi An.
Trains and long-haul buses also run to Da Nang from up and down the country. The only things that reach Hoi An directly are the occasional tourist sleeper bus and your own two feet. Pick your origin below.
A 2026 address note: Vietnam redrew its map in mid-2025 and Hoi An is no longer in Quang Nam Province - the area was folded into an expanded Da Nang City, and the old town is now officially the Hoi An ward. Tickets, timetables and hotel addresses that still say Quang Nam mean the same place; nothing about the journey changed except the paperwork.
From Da Nang: the last 30km
This is the leg everyone does, whichever way they arrived in Vietnam. Da Nang airport to Hoi An is 30km, about 45 minutes, and the choice runs from a $1 public bus to a private car waiting at arrivals with your name on a sign.

From Hue
Hue is 120km north, on the far side of the Hai Van Pass - the cloud-wreathed coastal mountain road that a certain British car show once called one of the best in the world. They weren't wrong.
Three ways to do it: the train (2.5-3 hours, 80,000-270,000 VND, and the Hai Van stretch is one of the great rail views in Asia), the sleeper bus (about 2.5 hours direct, 90,000-390,000 VND), or a private car that stops at the pass for photos. If you only take one scenic transfer in Vietnam, make it this one.
From Hanoi
Hanoi is 800km away, so this is a fly-or-commit decision. The fast way is a 1 hour 20 minute flight to Da Nang (from around 700,000 VND one-way), then the 30km transfer.
The romantic-but-long way is the reunification train to Da Nang - 15 to 17 hours, but a proper experience with a sleeper berth and the time to enjoy it. Direct tourist sleeper buses also run Hanoi to Hoi An in 18-22 hours: cheap, slow, and a story either way.
From Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon)
Same logic as Hanoi, opposite end of the country. Fly to Da Nang in about 1 hour 15 (low-cost fares start near $25 if you book ahead), then transfer the last 30km.
Trains and sleeper buses make the trip too, but they're a 17-hour-plus commitment from Saigon. Unless the journey is the point, fly.
