Description
Mrs Liên runs one of two banh mi stalls sitting side by side on Cửa Đại, a little east of the Old Town, and the locals queueing to take away are the tell. The bread does the work: crackly, warm, and fresh, stuffed for 20,000 to 25,000 dong – roughly half what the famous Old Town stalls charge for a sandwich that, by plenty of accounts, is not as good.
The fillings cover the full range – char siu pork, chicken, Vietnamese ham, sausage, paté, and the egg versions (trứng and op la) that make it a proper breakfast. The pork is the standard first order; the 20k egg banh mi is the one to get in the morning.
It is a stall, not a restaurant, so set expectations accordingly: a couple of plastic tables under cover at the back, a friendly lady who waves at the regulars, and a neighbour – Big Mom’s – running the same hustle right next door. Open early to late, 5am to 11pm with a break in the middle of the day. Cash only.
