Son is a family-run Vietnamese spot just outside Hoi An’s Old Town, set on the river away from the tour-group crush. It works best for anyone who wants a proper home-cooked meal rather than another tourist-menu pho stall, and it’s become a repeat stop for travelers who come back to Hoi An year after year. The setting is simple, just tables in a family house, but the cooking makes up for the lack of polish.
Order the grilled pork belly, duck in orange sauce, stuffed squid, and the cassava noodle salad if you want to see what the kitchen can do beyond the standard tourist dishes. Morning glory stir fry, fresh spring rolls, and pancakes round out a solid table order, and portions are generous for the price point. Expect a basic rice-and-chicken plate to run around 50k dong, tea around 15k, and white coffee about 25k. Go for lunch or early dinner, since the small setup means slower service once it fills up.
This isn’t fine dining and it isn’t trying to be, it’s a neighborhood kitchen that happens to cook better than a lot of the polished restaurants closer to town.
