Description
Hoi An Market is the main covered market in the old town, and it does a lot of things at once: fresh produce, wet market, dried spices, coffee, clothing stalls, and a whole eating area with food stalls and smoothie vendors. It is loud, packed, and occasionally overwhelming, which is part of the point. If you want to see how locals actually shop rather than how tourists imagine they shop, this is the place.
The non-food section runs along the edges and spills outside, with vendors selling the usual souvenirs alongside some worthwhile finds. The chopstick engraving stall directly opposite Samurai Kitchen has come up repeatedly and for good reason – personal, affordable, and the owner will literally fan you on a hot day.
On the food side, head for the durian and mangosteen stalls – durian runs around VND 100k/kg – and order bánh mì heo, papaya mango salad, grilled octopus, or beef wrapped in betel leaves. Booth F092, just past the food market exit, is worth stopping at for straightforward pricing without haggling. If you order juice, say no sugar and no condensed milk up front, or it arrives sweetened either way.
Bargaining is expected and not optional. Vendors will approach you, repeatedly, and prices for foreigners often run higher than what locals pay – treat the first number as an opening offer, especially on fruit and vegetables. Weigh and inspect fruit before paying since damaged pieces slip into bags more often than they should, and skip the fish and seafood stalls if you’re picky about freshness. Go early morning for the best produce and a cooler walk.
