Grandma Kitchen
Description
Grandma Kitchen sits on the edge of the Thu Bon River in the old town, with a patio that catches the evening breeze and a few tables with direct water views. The pace here is deliberately slow – staff take their time with you in a way that feels respectful rather than neglectful, which is rarer than it should be in tourist-heavy Hoi An.
The Hoi An chicken rice is the dish to order. The cooking classes run by Jam have a strong following, and the food you make is reportedly good enough to recreate at home (which is a higher bar than it sounds).
One hard note: this is not a safe option for coeliacs. At least one reviewer had a serious issue after being initially told the menu was safe. If gluten is a medical concern, go elsewhere.
Highlights
- River-facing patio seating makes it one of the better spots for an evening meal in the old town
- Cooking classes with Jam get strong praise for teaching actual technique, not just a tourist run-through
- Food spicing is kept at local levels rather than dialled back for foreigners
- Food quality gets described as average by at least one reviewer, so it is not universally praised
