Best Day Trips from Hoi An
Hoi An is a good place to do very little. It is also a good base, because some of the best of central Vietnam sits within a day's round trip - caves, Cham ruins, an offshore coral reef, a mountain of theme-park excess, and one of the great coastal roads in Asia. Marble Mountains
The closest and the easiest win. Five limestone outcrops 20 minutes north, riddled with caves, Buddhist shrines, and a summit view over the coast - plus a Vietnam War field-hospital cave that lands harder than most tourist sites. My Son Sanctuary
The Cham temple ruins, roughly an hour southwest. UNESCO-listed, over a thousand years old, and interesting if you like ancient sites - though plainly, it is pretty rather than jaw-dropping, and American bombing left much of it in rubble. Go early to beat the heat and the buses, set your expectations to "weathered brick in the jungle," and it rewards the trip. The My Son guide has the timing and tour details.
Hai Van Pass
Less a destination than a road. The 21 km of switchbacks between Da Nang and Hue is the ride every motorbike traveller comes for, and it is still a fine one - the views over the coast are the draw, even if a big resort development has chewed up some of the ground that used to make them. Ba Na Hills and the Golden Bridge
The polarising one. A French-village theme park on a mountaintop, reached by a record-setting cable car, with the Instagram-famous Golden Bridge held up by two giant stone hands. It is busy, it is expensive, and purists hate it - but the cable-car ride and the bridge are something, and kids love it. A full day, and worth booking ahead. Cham Islands
The only one that needs a boat, and the only one with a season. Speedboats cross from Cua Dai pier in 15-20 minutes to a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve with 357 hectares of coral reef, and a standard trip packs snorkeling, a seafood lunch and beach time into one $25-50 day. Short on time and want the most for the least effort: Marble Mountains. History buff: My Son, early. On a motorbike and chasing the road: Hai Van Pass, ideally riding through to Hue. Travelling with kids or after the big-ticket spectacle: Ba Na Hills. After a reef and a beach: the Cham Islands, March to September only. Two days to spare: Marble Mountains as a morning, then a full day at either My Son or Ba Na depending on whether you want ruins or rides.
