Tan An Market is the everyday market Hoi An locals actually shop at, tucked away from the tourist strip and stocked with fresh produce, meat, fish, dried goods, tropical fruit, and household basics. It suits anyone who wants a real market experience without the theater of the more famous stalls near the Old Town, and it’s a good stop if you like wandering and comparing prices counter to counter. It’s within walking distance of many Hoi An hotels and resorts, including a short walk from Almanity Resort.
Stalls sell mango, mangosteen, jackfruit, custard apple, durian, and longan, plus a scattering of household stalls; fried bananas run around 10,000 VND. Mangoes run anywhere from 30,000 to 90,000 VND per kilogram, mangosteens between 40,000 and 100,000 VND per kilogram, and jackfruit around 1.5kg for 95,000 VND when bought alongside other fruit. Many stall owners will peel and cut fruit for you on request – ask for it to be peeled and cut in front of you, not pulled pre-mixed from a basket, since a few sellers will hand over unwashed, dust-covered peels sliced in with the flesh. Some stalls post prices on cardboard signs so you pay the same as locals; others will quote foreigners a higher number, so watch what the person in front of you pays. A nearby supermarket sells essentials like soy sauce cheaper than Lotte Mart. On the 1st and 15th of the lunar month, a woman sets up just outside the market selling vegetarian food worth timing your visit around.
Prices swing hard depending on the stall and whether you look like a tourist – one vendor’s 45,000 VND mango is another’s 90,000 VND mango, so walk the whole market and compare a couple of stalls before buying. Anything packaged or branded is worth price-checking against a supermarket first. Go in the morning when the produce is freshest and the market is at its busiest, and watch for motorbikes weaving through the narrow lanes while you shop.
