Bánh mì Phượng Mập (Banh Mi Big Mom)
Description
This is a street-side banh mi stall in Hoi An working out of three small boxes, pumping out crispy loaves stuffed with fragrant roast pork, char siu, shredded pork, and fried egg. Locals roll up on motorbikes and buy drive-thru style, which tells you everything about how good and how fast this operation runs. The bread is light and crackly, the meat is well seasoned, and for the price it beats most of the touristy banh mi shops in town.
A loaf runs around 20,000 VND, with pricing usually landing at 20k for one filling and 25k for two. There’s no seating to speak of, this is a grab-and-go stop, and it gets busy with locals during regular meal hours. Bring cash.
Stick to the middle box of the three – it quotes a consistent price regardless of who’s ordering, while the front box has a habit of charging foreign customers more. Skip this one if inconsistent pricing bothers you, but for a cheap, tasty, authentic banh mi fix, it’s worth the short walk from most hotels in the area.
