Tra Que Vegetable Village Restaurant
Description
This sits right inside the Tra Que vegetable gardens outside Hoi An, part restaurant, part working farm, run by a local family who also teach cooking classes on site. It suits anyone doing a bike or moped tour through the village, or travelers who want a cooking class that starts with pulling vegetables from the ground rather than picking them off a supermarket shelf. Ruby, one of the hosts and cooking teachers, handles groups with vegans and picky eaters without missing a beat.
The cooking class format starts with a market shopping trip, then moves to the garden for a walk through the organic herbs and vegetables before you cook. On the a la carte side, order the fried spring rolls and the papaya salad, or a noodle dish if you’re just stopping for lunch. Fresh coconut water and squeezed juices are on hand for something cooling between courses. It gets busy with tour groups earlier in the day – a Sunday afternoon around 3:30pm had one table with the whole garden view to themselves.
This beats a generic hotel cooking class because the setting does half the work – you’re eating with a view of the actual garden your lunch came from. Vegan options exist but are limited, so vegetarians and vegans should mention it when booking rather than hoping the menu covers it. Go later in the afternoon if you want quiet over crowds.
