Bánh Mì Phượng
Description
Bánh mì Phượng has been making sandwiches since 1989, and the Anthony Bourdain visit turned what was already a local institution into a full-blown pilgrimage stop. The bread is the real story here – small, light, with tapered ends and a crisp crust that doesn’t turn to cardboard after two bites (a low bar that more places fail than you’d expect).
The fillings are layered with thick, glossy sauces rather than plain butter, which gives each bánh mì a richness that distinguishes the Hội An style from what you’d find elsewhere in Vietnam. The BBQ pork version is the one to get on a first visit.
It gets crowded -, turn-you-sideways crowded – but the staff move fast and the queue clears quicker than it looks. If you can’t score a seat inside, the parking area right outside works fine as an impromptu dining spot.
Highlights
- Service handles high volume efficiently - wait times are short despite the crowds
- Fillings and sauces are notably richer and more layered than average bánh mì elsewhere
- Price point is extremely low for the quality (around 45,000 VND per sandwich)
- A significant 2023 food safety incident affected many customers, worth keeping in mind
