Chuben Bánh Mì
Description
Sweet bánh mì is the whole concept here – baguettes filled with whipped cream and fruit flavors like mango passionfruit, tiramisu, and crispy rice, sold from a small stall inside a courtyard. It’s a genuine novelty in Hoi An’s dessert scene, where the options are mostly banana pancakes and that’s about it.
The mango passionfruit is the one to get. The baguette itself is the best part – sweet, crispy crust – and the filling is light enough that you won’t feel wrecked afterward. They also pour fish sauce for tasting, which is either delightful or very strange depending on who you are.
Portions are small. Some people find the fillings underwhelming once the novelty wears off. This is a snack, not a meal, and it works best if you treat it that way.
Highlights
- The baguette crust itself - sweet, crispy, well-made - is a highlight
- Light enough to eat without feeling heavy afterward
- Genuinely original concept with no real equivalent elsewhere in town
- Fillings can feel thin - mostly whipped cream with little depth of flavor
