Sampan Cantonese Seafood & Bar

Description

A Cantonese seafood restaurant sitting right on the Thu Bon River, where you can watch lantern boats drift past while eating some of the best Peking duck in Hoi An. The duck comes as a three-course set – wraps first, then stir-fried meat with vegetables, then a mustard green soup – and it’s the right way to do it.

This is not a cheap night out by Hoi An standards, but the kitchen earns it. The mapo tofu and sour vegetable soup have their fans too, so don’t treat this as a one-trick duck spot. Honey and the rest of the team are the kind of hosts who’ll photograph your table and bring out fruit if you mention a birthday.

Highlights

Insider Tip
Order the full Peking duck set for two - the mustard green soup that comes at the end is what most people overlook and it's the sleeper hit of the three courses.
Pros
'- The Peking duck set (one duck, three dishes) is consistently the standout dish - multiple reviewers call it the best they've had in Hoi An or anywhere
- Staff and owner are exceptionally attentive and warm, well above the usual restaurant baseline
- River location with lantern boats passing makes for a genuinely good evening atmosphere
- Dishes beyond the duck (mapo tofu, sour vegetable soup) also land well
Cons
- Hours appear unreliable or not updated on Google Maps - at least one visitor turned up on consecutive days to a closed door
- Price sits noticeably higher than most Hoi An restaurants, so go in knowing that
Best For
Couples, Groups, Date night, Splurge
