Tra Que Vegetable Village
Description
Tra Que sits on a small alluvial island between the Co Co River and Tra Que Lagoon, about 3 km from Hoi An Old Town. Families here have farmed this same soil since the 16th century, and the plot system still stands: ten households work assigned rows of herbs and vegetables using traditional methods, no chemicals, just river silt and seaweed compost. It suits anyone who wants a break from the Old Town crowds and likes the idea of walking through working farmland rather than a staged garden.
Park in the paid lot and walk a few hundred meters to the fields. You can join the farmers for planting or watering a herb bed, take a rice-flour pancake making class, or book a cooking session that comes with a rice-field tour and sometimes a massage thrown in. Buy black pepper, sesame, and coriander straight from the growers. The bok choy served at the on-site restaurant is some of the most tender you’ll find in the region. Go early morning to see farmers actually working, before the tour buses arrive.
This isn’t an untouched village, there’s a restaurant, souvenir stalls, and a steady stream of tour groups, so anyone expecting total authenticity should adjust expectations. But the food quality and the setting still beat most organized Hoi An day trips, and the countryside walk alone is worth the short trip out of town.
