Laco Cooking class & Restaurant
Description
Laco runs both a sit-down restaurant and cooking classes, and the family running it is clearly the main attraction. Ms. Hien and crew treat guests like they’ve been expected, which is rarer than it should be in the Old Town tourist circuit.
The food leans into Central Vietnamese flavors done properly – the lemongrass squid gets mentioned repeatedly, and a palm leaf salad (gỏi lá cọ) for 80,000 VND is the kind of find that makes you smug at dinner. Prices across the board are surprisingly low for the setting, which has genuine charm without trying too hard.
The cooking class pairs with an optional basket boat tour, making it a solid half-day package for people who want more than another bowl of cao lầu. Organized, personal, and you actually eat what you make.
Highlights
- Prices are low relative to the food quality and atmosphere
- Cooking class is well-organized and comes with a real meal at the end
- Specific dishes (lemongrass squid, palm leaf salad) punch above their price point
- The garlic bread gets outsized praise, which suggests the menu may lean toward crowd-pleasing at times
