Zen Leather Workshop
Description
Zen Leather Workshop is run by Zen (also known as Hoa), a graphic designer turned leather and bookbinding obsessive who teaches out of her home in a quiet, family-style setup. You come here to actually make something – a wallet, a journal with a leather cover, a bag, a tech organizer – not to watch someone else make it for you. The workshops are fully hands-on and she walks you through every step, including the bits you’ll mess up twice before getting right.
The bookbinding side is genuinely the standout here. Zen teaches traditional pattern-binding techniques that take real time to complete (block out a full morning, not just an hour), and the finished notebooks are the kind of thing you’ll actually use rather than stuff in a drawer. Wallets and bags are equally customizable – color, leather type, layout, all of it negotiable.
This suits people who want to leave Hoi An with a skill and a story, not just a purchase. Beginners are the target audience and the whole team treats that seriously. (Cookie the dog may also be present, which is never a con.)
Highlights
- Full customization on every product - colors, patterns, dimensions, and design are all up for discussion
- The bookbinding workshop in particular gets consistent praise as a highlight of people's entire Hoi An trip
- Small, private atmosphere makes it feel like a personal session rather than a group class
- With only a small number of reviews, availability and scheduling details are unclear, so contact ahead rather than walking in
