Description

Kim Bong is the carpentry village that’s been supplying Hoi An with its woodwork for centuries, and it still functions as a real working community rather than a tourist set piece. You can watch craftsmen shape timber into furniture, decorative panels, and traditional boat parts using techniques passed down through generations.

The village sits across the Thu Bon River from the Ancient Town, which makes the journey there part of the experience (a short sampan ride beats walking). The workshops are open, the craftsmen are unbothered by visitors, and nobody is going to corner you into buying a lacquered trinket.

This suits anyone who finds ‘cultural experience’ usually means standing behind a rope. Here you can actually get close to the work, ask questions, and pick up small hand-carved pieces directly from the people who made them.

Highlights

Insider Tip
Cross by sampan from the Ancient Town rather than going by road - the boat drop-off puts you right at the village entrance and costs almost nothing.
Pros
- Craftsmen are welcoming and not at all pushy with sales
- Authentic working village atmosphere, not a staged display
- Friendly, relaxed environment that rewards slow exploration
Cons
- With only a handful of reviews covering the experience, it's hard to know how much depth the visit offers beyond a single walk-through
- Getting there requires planning - the river crossing and location mean it doesn't suit a quick detour
