Description

Cam Kim Island sits just across the Thu Bon River from Hoi An’s Ancient Town, and the main reason to go is Kim Bong Carpentry Village – the place that produced the woodcarvers responsible for every ornate detail you’ve been photographing in the old town. Getting there is half the point: a short boat ride from the dock near the Japanese Covered Bridge.

The island moves slowly, which is either a feature or a bug depending on your travel style. It suits people who want to understand where Hoi An’s craft traditions actually come from, rather than just buying the finished product at a tourist shop.

Bring cash, wear something you don’t mind getting dusty, and plan for a half-day rather than a full one. There’s enough to see without rushing, but not enough to fill an entire day unless you cycle the back roads (which is worth doing).

Insider Tip
Rent a bicycle once you're on the island and ride past the carpentry workshops toward the southern rice fields - the back road loop takes about 45 minutes and is almost entirely free of other tourists.
Pros
- Short, scenic boat ride from central Hoi An makes the journey itself enjoyable
- Kim Bong Carpentry Village gives real context to the ancient town's famous wooden architecture
- Quieter and less crowded than the Ancient Town, even on busy days
Cons
- Limited visitor reviews make it hard to gauge consistency of the experience
- Not much infrastructure for independent travelers once you arrive - worth arranging a guide
