Duc Thanh Lantern Making Class
Description
A lantern-making workshop run out of a family shop a short walk from the old town crowds. You sit down, get shown how to stretch fabric over a folding bamboo frame, and leave with something you actually made. The class runs 30-40 minutes at the quick end and up to several hours if you want to paint and finish properly (one reviewer spent four hours and the shop stayed open for them).
The price is 150,000 VND per person, which is noticeably cheaper than the workshops closer to the tourist center. The teachers – ask for Tho or Ta – guide you through the steps without taking over. Kids from age six upward handle it fine, and the instructors have the patience to prove it.
Being off the main drag is the whole point here. The street is quiet, the pace is relaxed, and the family running it treats you like you dropped by their house rather than a ticketed attraction.
Highlights
- Genuinely patient with children - multiple families with kids aged 6 to 12 had good experiences
- Cheaper than old town lantern workshops for the same activity
- Flexible timing - at least one visitor was allowed to keep working after closing
- Sessions can vary in length with no clearly fixed duration, so hard to plan around
