Thanh Cao Lau
Description
Thanh Cao Lau does one thing and does it exceptionally well – the namesake dish of Hoi An. The noodles are handmade, chewy, and correct, topped with well-seasoned pork, crispy fried pork rinds, and a deeply flavored sauce that holds everything together. At 35,000 VND for a small bowl and 50,000 VND for a large, this is one of the best-value meals you’ll find in the city.
The setup is classic street-food Vietnam – small space, low plastic stools, no frills. Locals fill the place early, which tells you everything you need to know about the quality. A vegetarian option is available if you need it, and the yogurt drinks are worth ordering alongside your bowl.
Skip this on your first day and you’ll regret it – multiple visitors said eating here on their last day was a mistake because they couldn’t come back. Get here before the mid-afternoon rush or you may find they’ve sold out entirely.
Highlights
- Crispy fried pork rinds on top add a textural contrast that elevates the whole bowl
- Large bowl costs around 50,000 VND (approx. $2 USD) - outstanding value for the quality
- Vegetarian version available, which is rare for a Cao Lau specialist
- Staff are warm and clearly take pride in what they're serving
- Bare-bones seating with low plastic stools - not comfortable for everyone
- Menu is essentially one dish, so if Cao Lau isn't your thing, there's little reason to come
