LaHoiAn Coffee
Description
An old merchant house that hasn’t been dressed up for tourists, which is exactly the point. The natural ventilation actually works, the music comes from a cassette player and an old radio (this is as lo-fi as lo-fi gets), and there’s a courtyard in the back you’d never guess existed from the street. A second floor gallery shows paintings by Vietnamese women, which beats staring at your phone while you wait.
The drinks are a mixed bag. Fruit teas, smoothies, and the orange-cinnamon tea land consistently well. The salt coffee is the mix-it-yourself style, not the creamy poured version some people expect. Skip the coconut coffee – reviewers flag it as watery and flavorless. The complimentary jasmine tea they bring before your order is a nice touch, especially on a hot afternoon.
Prices are fair for the old town, the staff are warm, and kids have enough nooks and courtyard space to keep themselves entertained. Note that at least one review flags the toilet situation as unpleasant, so manage expectations accordingly.
